- Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the U.S.,
affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18
and older (18.1% of U.S. population).
- 40 million people in the U.S. will experience an impairment because
of an anxiety condition this year.
- Only 4 million will receive treatment, and of those, only 400,000 will
receive proper treatment.
The causes of anxiety disorders are currently unknown, although research has provided several clues. Areas of the brain that control fear responses may have a role in some anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders can run in families, suggesting that a combination of genes and environmental stressors play a role in having anxiety. Brain chemistry is also being investigated as a cause as well.
